A man attempting to flee from police in his sedan caused some extensive damage in South Baltimore. The chase began when an officer attempted to approach the man’s vehicle in the Mount Clare Junction area. The driver then drove away, eventually coming down Carey Street, where he hit a pickup truck passing through the Washington Boulevard intersection. The collision sent both vehicles into a tailspin, which came to rest near a light pole.

According to reports, the man was traveling with a 1 year old, who was not seriously harmed, and a 26 year old woman, who witnesses stated suffered a serious arm injury.

Police later identified the 26 year old man, and reported that he fled due to being wanted for assault and a narcotics violation. He was subsequently taken to Shock Trauma for non-life threatening injuries.

Following the collision, a team of firefighters worked to extricate the driver of the truck, which had ended up on top of the sedan. Authorities reported that the driver was transported to Shock Trauma for minor injuries.

With the number of car wrecks that happen on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis here in Maryland, is it really a wonder that more people are not hurt as a result of some kind of traffic-related accident at least once in their lives? It’s a sad truth that as long as we have motor vehicles and roadways on which to drive them, that there will likely continue to be mishaps on city streets, in rural areas and on every stretch of interstate expressway in this state.

Quite frankly, with the literally millions of vehicle miles racked up every year all across the U.S., it shouldn’t be too surprising that there are on average five to six million automobile, motorcycle and trucking-related crashes annually. With the traffic death of a young teen in Salisbury a couple weeks ago following a police chase, we happened to run across an older news report from last fall involving a police-related traffic accident. In that earlier incident, several teenagers were seriously hurt when the vehicle in which they were traveling was involved in a collision with a police cruiser that ran through a red light in Northwest Baltimore. At the time of the collision the officer reportedly had his emergency lights on; however, that fact didn’t change the severity of the injuries sustained by three of the young men in the car that fateful morning.

Of course, one cannot have a discussion of injuries caused by car, truck or motorcycle accidents without acknowledging that the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is highway wrecks. While the incident in question involved a number of older teenagers, the fact that more than 1,000 kids 15 years and under lose their lives every year is not insignificant.

In fact, if we consider the Maryland statistics regarding auto-related injuries and deaths for children older than four years of age, the trend has been heading downward over the past several years, at least through 2011 when there were 280 child deaths attributed to traffic accidents. While it is heartening to see a reduction in the rate of fatal incidents involving children, we must say that any death is one too many.

When a traffic accident happens, the occupants of each of the vehicles involved have a good chance of being hurt to some extent. Motor vehicle collisions can be some of the most violent and deadly accidents that an individual may experience in his or her lifetime. Passengers and driver alike can sustain bone fractures, burns, internal injuries and closed-head trauma. Of these, broken bones are usually the most common among victims of automobile and trucking-related wrecks.

The sheer force of a medium- to high-speed roadway collision can result in severe breaks, and even multiple breaks in the same bone. Whether a break is of the so-called simple type or of the compound variety, those fractures sustained in car crashes tend toward being more serious and, as such, they usually require surgery to treat fully. For many victims, it is not uncommon to have screws, plates, or other fastening hardware employed to bring the bone back into alignment and to return it as closely as possible to full strength.
