Fatal Single Vehicle Accident in Montgomery County

Montgomery County police reported another single vehicle car accident happened earlier this month, but in this case proved to be fatal for the driver from Mount Airy. The man was killed in a crash on Laytonsville Road, near Hawkins Creamery Road, south of Damascus. cherry_tree.jpg

Police, who were called to the scene at around 8:30 a.m., said in a statement that the man’s Hyundai Sonata apparently drifted from the road for unknown reasons before it struck a large tree, and then rolled over before finally coming to rest on a fence. Although the man was flown to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said he later died from his injuries.

Police do not know what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. There were reportedly no passengers in the car at the time of the collision. It took rescuers a half of an hour to free the man from his car. An investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study into the causes of single vehicle accidents, and found that common factors included things such as:

  • driver sleep,
  • drivers with a history of alcohol use,
  • roadway alignment with curve,
  • speeding,
  • high speed limit road, and</li
  • adverse weather

These factors were considered significant in their relation to a high risk of fatal single-vehicle run-off-road crashes. Additional factors identified by the study included things more commonly associated with third party behaviors, such as engagement with passengers or avoiding other collisions or obstructions in the road. In fact, the study held that passenger vehicles were more likely to be involved in these types of collisions than any other vehicle.

Car accidents usually happen because one driver was at fault. The theory of fault is usually negligence, meaning that the driver failed to act reasonably in the operation of his or her vehicle. A driver cannot drive in such a way as to needlessly endanger other motorists or pedestrians. Violations of this standard include things such as driving at an excessive speed, failing to observe yield or another driver’s right of way, failure to stop at traffic lights, etc. If another driver negligently caused you or a loved one injury, you may be entitled to compensation for your damages, including medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, etc. An experienced car accident attorney can fully advise you regarding your rights.
