Maryland Car Accident Attorney Blog
Earlier this week in Springettsbury Township, Pennsylvania, a chain-reaction accident took the life of one Maryland man and injured several others. According to one local news report, the accident occurred around 11:45 in the morning.
Evidently, there was a line of three cars waiting to get off a highway exit ramp when a vehicle approaching from the rear failed to stop or slow down. That vehicle crashed into the rear-most car in the line, which sent it into the cars in front of it. In all, the accident involved four vehicles.
The driver of the first vehicle to be rear-ended was an 86-year-old man from Parkton, Maryland. He was taken to the nearest hospital but was shortly after pronounced dead. His wife and two others involved in the accident were also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The extent of their injuries is not currently known.
The police are not sure why the driver failed to slow or stop for the approaching traffic, but an investigation is currently underway, and charges may be filed after the investigation is complete.
Rear-End Accidents in Maryland
This accident is a classic case of a rear-end accident where one driver was distracted and was not paying attention to the road ahead of him. Whenever we see a case where a driver slams into the rear-end of another car at full force—without so much as even slowing down—it is almost certainly due to distracted or inattentive driving.
Distracted Driving Accidents
In Maryland, it is not illegal, per se, to drive while distracted. This is in part due to the inability for police officers to define and determine what “distracted driving” consists of. However, certain types of distracted driving are illegal and drivers can be cited prior to causing an accident. For example, it is not legal to text while driving in Maryland.
Other types of distracted driving, such as talking to a passenger, are not illegal but may be the basis for civil liability in a personal injury suit arising from an accident caused by the distracted driver. In these cases, the driver is not technically violating the law until he or she causes an accident because of his or her negligence.
In either case, the accident victim who was injured as a result of the driver’s negligence may be entitled to monetary compensation for any injuries.
