Man Attempting to Flee Maryland Traffic Stop Killed After Being Ejected From Car

A Delaware man was killed in Maryland earlier this month after he was ejected from the car he was driving in an attempt to flee a traffic stop. grassy%20field.jpg

The incident occurred just after 2:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, when a trooper on patrol radared a Chevy Malibu traveling at 66 mph in a 50 mph. The trooper then activated the emergency equipment on his marked car, and pulled the vehicle over.

As the officer approached the car and began talking with the driver, another vehicle pulled up behind the trooper’s car. The driver stated that the other car contained his girlfriend. At that point, while the trooper was still conversing with the driver of the Malibu, the driver sped off, attempting to flee the traffic stop. Police have stated that the man’s license was revoked, and that he was wanted on a traffic warrant.

The trooper ran back to his car, and reported that the vehicle had fled the stop. The driver of the Malibu had since turned his car lights off. Within a mile of the stop, the Malibu veered off of the road and crashed into a field.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the driver failed to negotiate a curve, and crossed over the opposite lane of traffic before becoming airborne, and flipping at least four times through a local farm field. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene. An investigation remains ongoing.

Fleeing traffic stops is an incredibly dangerous decision. In addition to facing potential criminal charges, excessive speeding and erratic driving inherent in attempting to get away can put the driver and all others on the roadway at risk of serious injury or, as in this case, death.

While it is tragic that the driver was killed in this case, especially since he was reportedly fleeing due to driving related issues, it is fortunate that no one else was seriously hurt or killed. If you have been injured, or a loved one has been killed as a result of another driver’s negligent actions, such as in this case, you may be entitled to compensation for damages relating to your injuries or loss.
